Water Drainage

Here on the coastal plain of the Eastern Shore, many properties tend to hold standing water, or have a need to move large amounts of water from the property fast. Tidal fluctuations and heavy rains cause drainage proplems, even on properties that stay dry most of the year.

Due to a hard packed clay content in the ground beneath top soils, water can take quite a long time to drain after flood tides and torrential rains. Drainage problems may be fixed as simply as digging a trench and installing a french drain, or through grading of the land in order to move water away from homes or recreation areas.

Sometimes, as pictured on this page, greater measures may be required, such as culverts and ponds. A pond may be used to hold standing water without creating a mosquito problem, as fish and other fauna can be introduced to control insect populations.
