Accomack County is the larger of Virginia’s two Eastern Shore counties — a 476-square-mile landscape stretching from the Maryland line south to Northampton County, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean barrier islands to the east. This is the Virginia Shore: a place where the Delmarva Peninsula narrows, the agricultural fields run between two bodies of water, and the waterfront is never more than a few miles away in any direction.
The county’s character is defined by its small towns — Chincoteague on the Atlantic side, Onancock and Accomac on the Chesapeake side, Parksley and Onley along the Route 13 corridor. Each has its own identity, its own property market, and its own landscape management needs. Chincoteague draws tourists and second-home buyers with its proximity to Assateague Island and the National Wildlife Refuge. Onancock is an arts-focused waterfront town with historic architecture. The Route 13 corridor handles the county’s commercial and service economy.
Marshall Property Management extends our Delmarva service area into Accomack County, bringing over 30 years of Eastern Shore expertise to a landscape we understand. The conditions here — tidal marsh interfaces, sandy coastal soils, salt exposure, phragmites pressure, and the realities of managing property in a coastal plain environment — are what we’ve built our business around.
The Accomack County Landscape#
Accomack County’s terrain is flat, low-lying, and defined by its relationship to water. The Chesapeake Bay shoreline to the west is indented with tidal creeks and marshes. The Atlantic side is fronted by a chain of barrier islands — Assateague, Wallops, Cedar, Parramore — with the coastal lagoon system behind them. Between the two coasts, the interior is agricultural land and small towns connected by Route 13.
Chincoteague and the Atlantic side — Chincoteague Island is a community of approximately 2,900 year-round residents that swells dramatically in summer. Properties here deal with salt exposure, sandy soils, barrier island weather, and the intensive seasonal use of a tourist economy. The proximity to Assateague Island and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge gives the area an ecological significance that influences property management and environmental compliance.
Onancock, Accomac, and the Chesapeake side — the Bay-facing towns of Accomack County have a different character: historic waterfront communities with colonial and Victorian architecture, working waterman traditions, and the kind of Chesapeake Bay property that attracts second-home buyers and retirees. Tidal marsh management and phragmites control are critical services here.
Route 13 corridor — Parksley, Onley, Melfa — the commercial spine of the county. Properties along this corridor range from commercial facilities to residential neighborhoods to the mixed-use properties that characterize small-town Eastern Shore.
