We build our planting plans here around proven salt-tolerant species — beach grasses, bayberry, wax myrtle, rugosa rose, and native meadow plantings that hold the soil and look like they belong here, because they do. For lawns, we work with turf varieties that can handle the stress and adjust fertility timing to match the island’s growing season patterns.

Phragmites and Shoreline Management

Tilghman is surrounded by marsh, and that means phragmites is a constant presence at the upland-marsh interface. Left unchecked, it shades out native marsh vegetation, reduces wildlife habitat, and closes off water views that are a central part of what makes island properties valuable. We use licensed herbicide application combined with mechanical clearing to push phragmites back and maintain healthy marsh edge transitions.

Our Environmental Services work on Tilghman also includes coordination with MDE and Critical Area requirements — island properties are almost entirely within the Critical Area, and any ground-disturbing work near the shoreline requires careful attention to regulatory requirements. Our MDE Erosion & Sediment Control Yellow Card certification gives us the credentials to manage these projects properly.
