Vienna is one of the older towns on the Eastern Shore — a small historic community on the east bank of the Nanticoke River, sitting at the edge of the broad, flat agricultural plain that stretches east toward Wicomico County. The Nanticoke is one of the larger rivers draining into the Chesapeake on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and it carries the character of a working river — wide, tidal, with a productive marsh edge and a history of boat traffic that predates the roads.

The Nanticoke River Waterfront

Vienna’s Nanticoke-facing properties deal with the same tidal dynamics as the Choptank waterfront in Cambridge, but with a different river character — the Nanticoke is less developed, more rural-feeling, and drains a larger agricultural watershed reaching up into Delaware. That watershed contribution means the Nanticoke carries more agricultural runoff, which affects water chemistry and influences what grows along the shoreline.

Phragmites is present along the Nanticoke edge as it is throughout the tidal rivers of Dorchester County. We manage it with licensed herbicide application and mechanical clearing under our MDA Pesticide Business License, in compliance with Maryland Critical Area and MDE guidelines.
