Grounds a congregation should not have to mow itself.

Churches used to have a sexton on the grounds. Most on the Shore now keep things going with a volunteer roster and a donated mower, and that holds up until the man who has cut the grass for fifteen years can’t do it anymore. We take the grass, the hardscape, and the landscape on one schedule, so the property committee is not filling holes week to week and the grounds look the same in August as they do at Easter.

We have worked on church and historic property on the Eastern Shore for over 30 years, including grounds where the building and the stones are older than the country. Mowing a churchyard is not the same as mowing a lawn. Old marble scars, old ground settles, and nothing out there can be replaced if a machine gets it wrong.

Mowing and Trimming Around Stones

A string trimmer run against soft marble or slate takes a layer off the face of the stone and the lettering goes with it. The damage does not wash off and it does not grow back. We hand trim tight to the stones, keep the machine off the monument, and treat leaning or cracked markers as things to work around rather than push past.

Historic Burial Grounds

Old graves settle. A depression in the turf usually means a grave shaft has collapsed, and a mower or a truck across it makes the hole worse. We learn where the soft spots are, keep heavy equipment off them, and mow those sections with lighter machines. Sunken plots, footstones buried under sod, and unmarked rows all get handled as ground conditions, not obstacles.

Beds and Plantings Against an Old Building

Foundation beds at a historic building are not the place for whatever is on sale at the garden center. Boxwood that has held its shape for decades gets pruned to keep that shape. Mulch goes down at a depth that drains away from brick and mortar instead of holding water against the wall. Bed lines stay where they have always been, cut clean, so the planting reads as part of the building.

Walks, Steps, and Entry Hardscape

Brick walks heave, gravel washes out, and a congregation that has aged in place has to get across all of it. We repair and reset walkways, steps, and entry paving, and we lay new access routes that hold up to real use without looking new against an old building. MHIC #105982.

Weeds, Edges, and Cleanups

Weeds at the base of every marker are the fastest way for a churchyard to look abandoned, and they are also the reason volunteers reach for whatever is in the shed. We handle weed and bed treatment under a Maryland Department of Agriculture pesticide business license, picking the product and the method for what is sitting next to the target. Spring and fall cleanups and storm debris are part of the same schedule.

Ready on the Day

A funeral gets scheduled with a few days’ notice. A wedding, a homecoming, or a churchyard tour gets scheduled a year out. Both need the grounds cut, edged, and cleaned up on a specific morning. Tell us the date and we work the schedule around it instead of around our route.

Historic Buildings, Not Just Churches

The same grass, hardscape, and landscape work applies to any property where the grounds are part of what is being preserved: historical society properties, museum houses, old town buildings, private historic homes, and family burial plots out on farm ground. Where a property carries a Maryland Historical Trust easement or sits inside a historic district, we work to what the property is allowed to do.

Grounds near tidal water bring a second layer. Shoreline erosion at the edge of a churchyard and phragmites moving into the back of the property are both things we treat, and our environmental services crew carries the MDE erosion and sediment control card for that work.

Newer Church Campuses

A church built in the last fifty years has a different property to look after: a larger lawn, a parking lot with islands and lot lines, a stormwater pond that has to keep working, a playground or ball field, and a lot of edge to keep sharp. That is a scheduled maintenance program more than a preservation job. We cover mowing, fertilization and weed control, bed and mulch programs, seasonal cleanups, parking lot islands, pond surrounds, and snow and ice on the lots and walks so Sunday morning access is clear.
